Born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1943, Frederick Hart is known across the United States for his mammoth Creation Sculptures, Ex Nihilo: the beautiful, swirling limestone figures created by the artist between 1974 and 1984 to grace the west facade tympana of the National Cathedral. An accomplished sculptor whose bronze commissions included the Three Soldiers at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington and the monumental James Earl Carter Memorial for the Georgia capitol building, Hart had found new inspiration in the acrylic medium of Lucite. Utilizing a process reflective of this extensive knowledge of bronze casting and stonecarving, Hart was admittedly the father of this twentieth-century medium.
