Born in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1921, Karel Appel was educated at the Academy of Art, Amsterdam from 1940 to 1943.
Appel's works are in major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, NY; Musee National d'Art Modern, Paris, France; Boston Museum of Fine Art, Boston, MA; and the Tate Gallery, London, UK.

Karel Appel was one of the founders of the art group CoBrA (Copenhagen/Brussels/Amsterdam), whose works were characterized by bold expressionist forms and raw, intense colors.
